Get hold of a good guide book for the area and swot up a bit before you go, it won't seem so daunting then. At Pompeii for eaxample, you are given a little guide book with your ticket and you can also hire an audio guide. The only exception is the Amalfi Coast tour which you can book for yourself in town.

The buses to and from destinations on the AC are very crowded and you may find yourself standing for an hour or more so a lot of people say the organised trip is worth it. Also the local bus to Sorrento goes by the hotel so you are not dependent on the hotel shuttle. I would agree the Amalfi Drive is worth while to do on a organised tour, in the comfort of a Coach'.

I went to Sorrento a couple of weeks ago with Thomson and went on their organised trip to Rome for the day, I did enjoy it and our guide that took us gave us so much information, it is a long trip though and our few hours there were no where near enough but I am still glad we went and got a little sample of what Rome is like. They are a little cheeky though because we planned on going on the Rome trip without the dinner which cost about 30 euro more each person but they advised us that really we should have the dinner as the restaurant they go to is in the middle of no where, its actually like a service station which you do stop off at on your way to Rome, it has a restaurant in it and there is nothing else around so if we didnt have the meal we would have nothing else to do.

They did try and push the Capri trip a bit and even claimed it was far cheaper to go with them than do it yourself, I knew different from reviews on here and just went to Capri on my own.

I found it worked out cheaper arranging a package as we could get flights from Glasgow ,half board and airport transfers were included. I agree with the others about doing tours on your own, Pompeii ,Herculeneum,Vesivius and capri are all easy to arrange on your own and a great deal cheaper.

We did the Amalfi coast organised tour and were very pleased with it,that is the one tour that is bit more akward arranging yourself and having the luxury of a touring coach as opposed to the local buses makes ut a much more pleasant trip. I agree, do all trips yourself apart from the Amalfi Drive. The trip does not include a stop in Positano so I would suggest going back there another day by boat, assuming you want to see Positano of course.

Unclegus, I totally agree, the Thomsons flight from Glasgow is great.

Any Thomson organised trips worth it? - Sorrento Forum

I just got back at the weekend and went from Gatwick, too much hassle! I usually go from Glasgow but it was a last minute thing. Hi, we have been twice to Sorrento with Thomson - and On the first visit we did everything by ourselves except the Amalfi Coast trip. We booked the select tour as it uses a small coach I think it's a seater which is able to park in Positano. The larger coaches drive through Positano but can't stop.

On our second visit we went to Positano by boat. If you go to Positano by yourselves then I think going one way by bus and the other by boat will give you the best of both worlds. We went to Pompeii on both holidays and that is something that I definitely would NOT want to do with an organised excursion! It isn't a place to visit while on a timetable. We went with Thomson last year to Sorrento. We hired a car for 2 days and drove along the Amalfi coast, this was preferable to being on a coach tour as you can stop where you like for those photo opportunities.

Also all those bends on a coach is not pleasant for those who suffer from the slightest motion sickness trust me, I did that years ago. If you want to visit Pompeii , the easiest way is to take the train from Sorrento straight to Pompeii as the station is right opposite the entrance to the ruins.

Plus the organised trips don't give you enough time here to explore. Again I did this years ago and when I went back independantly I couldn't believe the amount I'd missed the first time. This topic has been closed to new posts due to inactivity.
