He was determined that the Waldorf was to be the finest of its time and he planned three entrance halls, the middle one opening on to the Palm Court lounge. The result was a majestic example of Edwardian building and it bought Marshall Mackenzie a great deal of praise. The hotel was built with bedrooms, bathrooms, several of the rooms were arranged as small flats with sitting rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms. The grill room, restaurant and Masonic temple rooms were located in the basement. It was all very modern and the hotel had everything, even electric light operated from the bedside.

Every room had a telephone and there was a telephone exchange, which was previously unheard of. Two passenger lifts ran from the basement to the roof. In , when evening dress was obligatory in the ballroom, dancing became even more popular at the Waldorf when a new, handsome young bandleader took over. The greatest tragedy for the Waldorf came during the Second World War when, in the afternoon of June 30, , a flying bomb fell at the corner of Aldwych and Kingsway. The explosion crumpled two packed double decker-buses outside the hotel and staff rushed out to help the injured.

Hotel's Favorite. Excellent Covent Garden Location. This hotel is in the Covent Garden area and surrounded by lots of great restaurants. Also convenient to several tube stops for easy site-seeing. Would stay here again when in London.

Although the location of the Waldorf is good I find the service not as good asnthe other hotels. For example, last week when I checked ibto my room there was no TV remote. I politely called reception and askrd if one could be dropped off. I was told one woukd be brought straight up, but nearly an hour later there was still no sign, so had to ask again in person when heading out for dinner.

I found the experience phonibg the hotel a poor experience also. I absent mindedly left a shirt and casual jacket in my room's wardrobe when I checked out. I called the same evening to see if they had been found by housekeeping. It took three attempts as kept being put on hold and cut off while waitong, and on one time the member just abruptly hung up after saying they would find out, without any politeness or even asking my name, the room I had occupied, the items left behind, ir how I could be best contacted.

Eventually I did get through to someone who said they would check. Unfortunately I was told they had not been found. I tried calling again today to see it they subsequently turned up Sadly not. I appreciate that it is not the persons I spoke to on the phone who are to blame for the apparant theft of the clothes I left behind, but there are some serious training needs for how to speak to customers on the phone.

There seemed a palpable desperation to hang up as abruptly and quickly as possible. There is then some more free time to enjoy the sights of central London. The choice is yours — you could take a cruise on the Thames or perhaps enjoy a ride on the London Eye, charges extra. In the mid afternoon we commence our journey home arriving back later on.
