Last year the camp was just plain cold. The first day we pulled into camp it was wet and raining. The camp area we use was a mud pit and getting our trailer into a spot proved to be challenging. One thing some hunters overlook is their decoy spread. This has a lot to do with how successful a day could be. When you get to your spot and set up be sure to survey the area around you.
You can observe what the ducks are doing and tailor your spread to what they respond to. In areas that have a lot of pressure I have found a small decoy spread works better than a real big one. Ducks and geese become un-easy when they see lots of other birds congregated together and can be turned off from a spread which might otherwise be successful.
One thing I really like to observe is what the ducks are actually doing when they land. We have all been there in the field and have had a flock cup and land out of shotgun range. When they do, watch what they do. Are they packed tightly together or are they spread out? The shape of their group can provide you with clues about how you should be setting up yours decoys. Doing all this will give you some valuable tools you can use, it will save you time later in the season and will help jump start your season next year.
My last bit of advice would be about calling. It is an art in itself. I usually always have my calls in my truck so I can practice when I am by myself throughout the year. It happens and it happens a lot. Last piece of advice I have is being safe. I have hunted a bunch of different seasons with various weapons and, by far, duck hunting has been where I have had the closest calls.
I have almost been shot and I have almost drowned by stepping in the wrong spot. There are a lot of other things that can really put a hurting on you so exercise some caution when out in the field.
