North America in the Late Cretaceous was geographically similar to the continent we see today, but like a photograph of your parents when they were teenagers, there were some unexpected differences. For most of the Cretaceous, the landmass was split in two by a sea called the Western Interior Seaway. The two halves of North America in the Cretaceous, Laramidia in the West, and Appalachia in the East, remained apart for millions of years, only knitting together completely around 60m years ago.
