Ledyard - Victor Worst was 12 when he first started diving in the municipal swimming pool in his hometown of Carey, Ohio. At 17, when Worst signed up for the Navy, his plan was to join the service's underwater demolition team. The longtime owner of Aqua Sports Diving Center in Gales Ferry, Worst will turn 72 in November and he's still diving, teaching diving, and selling and hand manufacturing wetsuits and other diving equipment at the Baldwin Hill Road business that he and his wife, Donna, have owned and operated since But Worst was already employed at the business when he and Donna assumed ownership.

During his time in the Navy, and shortly after he left the service in , Worst worked at the dive shop, which the industry's marketing association has identified as one of the longest operating in the country. Today, Aqua Sports is still the dive shop that serious divers go to for their equipment. It's not just sailors from the nearby sub base, but commercial, recreational, and law enforcement divers from throughout the region who patronize the small - about square foot - but jam-packed business.

Both as a Navy and commercial diver Worst has been widely recognized for his ability and underwater feats, and is featured in the "International Legends of Diving," which chronicles his long career. He has helped to raise ships, set underwater explosives, find drowning victims, install instruments for scientific studies as deep as feet, and been called upon to test and evaluate new equipment for dive manufacturers.

Today, he spends his time in the Gales Ferry shop, helping customers, and in the classroom and the water, training new divers. While diving's heyday in the s and '90s has passed, there are still dedicated divers who visit the shop for wetsuits, tanks, regulators, fins, masks and snorkels, and buoyancy compensators. Victor and Donna Worst know the equipment and how to assist customers. For a time, back when business was booming, they branched into the scuba apparel business and began manufacturing their own wetsuits. But when free trade was introduced the market was flooded with cheaper wetsuits made overseas and the Worsts shuttered that portion of the business that once employed 15 people.

Today, Worst can still make a custom wetsuit for a hard-to-fit customer.
