The staff was amazing, very informative and pleased to share knowledge. We were very impressed with the staff and the willingness to spend time with us and answer questions about the culture and traditions of the Moari people. We enjoyed a mud bathe, thermal hot springs and massage!! Wow what a great treat.

There is nothing else like Hell's Gate, with the volcanic landscape and bubbling mud pools. Yes, Rotorua does have a sulfur smell, but it comes and goes, and I didn't notice it being unusually strong around Hell's Gate--unless of course you are standing directly over a steaming mud pit. Hell's Gate is never crowded because they don't allow bus tours, and I think that is much better because the eerie landscape is less commercialized. We also did the mud spa there, which is very popular. My only complaint is that my clothes smelled faintly of mud after I put them back on, and even after doing laundry when I returned they still have a slight smell to them!

Regardless, Hell's Gate is a little out of the way but it's worth the trip!

Hell's Gate is a nice walk through a thermal park, even on a rainly dreary day. The family of peacocks is neat, we have lots of pictures of them!! If you're on a tight budget, there are better things to spend your money on, however.
