I got 5 other people interested and set up a time to meet shortly after we all got off work. I thought I would bring a few games and let them choose what one sounded the most interesting. In the end, we decided to play Sushi go Party.

How do we fix life online without limiting free speech?

I picked out all the cards that are in the base game, set it up and then looked up how many cards to deal to everyone and the amount of pudding that gets shuffled in each round while everyone else chatted. From there it all kind of went downhill. I had to explain the rules 3 different times because people kept having their own side conversations and then missing parts. After the first round, no one seemed to get how the scoring worked so we chalked it up as a practice round and I counted out everyone's points and explained to them why their cards scored the way they did.

For the next 3 rounds, it was me constantly reminding people to lay down a card because they would get caught up talking, or everyone would be waiting on one person to pass their cards.

In the two hours we were there we got through 1 game of Sushi go. What went so wrong? This was my first time introducing games to anyone other than my husband I normally learn the rules, play a game with my husband and then when we play with others he teaches it so maybe I didn't do a good job explaining it to people who don't normally play board games? My other thought is maybe it was a poor choice for a first game or just the wrong choice for this group?

Everyone claims they had a good time and we are going to get together again this week to try again, this time with a few more people. I'm just not sure if I should try Sushi go again or try and figure out a game that would fit my group better? Edit: Thank you for all the responses. After reading through all your comments I agree that part of the issue was probably my expectations. My co workers had been asking me for along time to do a game night seeing as they know I love games. I think they underestimated the type of games I play and I overestimated their interest level.

I'm not going to give up yet, I'm more than fine with this group just playing party style games. I'm going to try a few things differently this time. We are going to go out to eat before hand so hopefully we get some of the socializing out of the way. Per suggestions we are going more party style with the game. If that goes well I'll try a social deduction game if they want to get together again. I mentioned it to a friend in the hobby, and he expressed concerns about sexist behavior at that con in particular. Specifically, he knew another female player that had a terrible experience it suffices to say it was sexist in nature.

She didn't feel comfortable enough to return next year. This might turn the rumor mill, but I'd like to know what the word is about this convention. Is it a safe place overall? Should I expect the normal amount of douchiness? I'm going either way, but I'd like to be mentally prepared, if possible.
